DIY Microphones

http://www.mp3forkidz.com/mic/index.html

This site features projects and circuits for building stereo microphones from low-cost Panasonic electret microphone capsules. Included are Mid-Side, XY, and Blumlein microphone setups. In addition, there are interesting related circuits and links to sites with microphone information and parts sources.

Finger-powered wah-wah

Hot Hand finger-powered wah-wah effect: "Here's an intriguing early NAMM release: Modern Guitars Magazine reports on Hot Hand, a $299 effects box which is controlled by a finger-mounted sensor. Wiggle your finger in different directions, and the effects change. Initially, the effects are various wah/filter effects. As it's designed for guitarists, I guess the idea is to have it on your right hand, strike a chord and wiggle a bit. It's produced by a new company called Source Audio (not an easy name to Google), which is a spin off from Analog Devices, who make the chips inside lots of synths. They're planning more products and the Hot Hand itself will be upgraded to do more than just wah effects. (Thanks to Keith from EmulatorXone)"

Firebirds

Firebirds is based on a scientific experiment from the Victorian area, in which Chichester Bell discovered that a membrane stretched over a gas flame produces audible vibrations in the flame, resulting in a kind of "flame loudspeaker." Gas flames, suitably modulated by electrical fields can be made to act as omnidirectional loudspeakers of surprising clarity and amplitude.

"It's a trick that every high school science teacher knows," said Paul DeMarinis. "But it's not commercially viable, so it became another piece of orphan technology."

Four oracular flames kept captive within birdcages recite speeches of Benito Mussolini, Franklin Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, accompanied by birdsongs. The audio filed are stored in CF-Ram as MO3 files. PIC microcontrollers activate solenoids, solid state relays, audio hardware and high voltage modulating circuits to coordinate the ignition and modulation of the flames.

An installation by Paul DeMarinis.

The Freesound Project

The Freesound Project aims to create a huge collaborative database of audio snippets, samples, recordings, bleeps, ... released under the Creative Commons Sampling Plus License. The Freesound Project provides new and interesting ways of accessing these samples, allowing users to

* browse the sounds in new ways using keywords, a "sounds-like" type of browsing and more

* up and download sounds to and from the database, under the same creative commons license

* interact with fellow sound-artists!

------

I have used sound from freesound for installations and it's a great idea and needs everyone's support. They hope to get to 20,000 sounds before they get to 2,000,000 downloads - so upload a sound today (and then download less than 10)!

The Future Of Audio Post-Production

The Future of Audio Post-Production

This has been out there for a little while, but it really covers most of the changes going on in the biz. Its written by Bob Grieve of Sound Dogs, on the editors guild website. It is a little scary, and yet I still believe that it is important to embrace change and learn to adapt - keep learning.

Walter Murch on workflow

Walter Murch talks about workflow with Final Cut Pro on Jarhead: EditorsNet - The Daily Film & Video Editing Resource

Anything Mr. Murch does gets my attention. This articles covers sound editing & mixing in Final Cut (temps only, thank you) and how FCP integrates with soundtrack pro.

Getting Started

My new attempt at blogging is about my vocation. Sound for film and video, sound editing, sound mixing, signal processing, music, dialog replacement, foley, voice over, new forms, and related notes on life... I hope someone finds it interesting.
